Getting Around in Toronto, Canada

Getting There
Pearson International airport is situated about 20 kilometres outside the city centre and has numerous buses which run to and from there every twenty minutes between 5.30am and 12.15am. Air Canada operates the most flights into and out of the city but most major US and Canadian carriers also fly daily between the US and Toronto. If you wish to fly to the city from outside the US, British Airways, Air France, SAS, Lufthansa, and KLM all offer non stop flights. Air Canada and Canadian Air also operate international flights between Toronto and most cities in northern Europe and Asia. Flights arriving from Australia and New Zealand usually connect through Los Angeles or Honolulu.

All trains to Toronto arrive in Union Station which is situated at 65 Front Street and the city has rail connections with all major Canadian cities as well as New York and Chicago in the US. The ticket office is open between 8.00am and 11.30pm from Monday to Friday, 8.00am and 6.30pm on Saturday and between 7.00am and 11.30pm on Sunday.
Finally, if you arrive in the city by bus you will find yourself at 610 Bay Street which lies just north of the Dundas Street Subway. There are connecting services with Ottawa, Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver as well as New York City and the ticket office is open daily between 5.00am and 1.00am.

Getting Around
Once you actually get to Toronto, making your way around the city couldn’t be easier. The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) is the second largest transit system in North America, only New York’s is larger, and more than a million people use its buses, streetcars and subway cars on a daily basis. As well as the TTC there are nine other public transit systems in the city.

The subway system runs between 6.00am and 1.30am from Monday to Saturday and from 9.00am until 1.30am on Sunday. Schedule information is posted at almost every stop as well as in each train, bus or streetcar. After 1.30am buses cover the same route so there is 24-hour public transport throughout the city. This late night service is called the Blue Night Network and transit stops are marked with a reflective blue band. Buses run every thirty minutes. The fare for TTC transport is $2 or you can purchase five tokens for $8. There is also a one-day travel pass available which will cost you $7.
