The entertainment scene in Toronto is an aspect of city life which has flourished in recent years, and is continuing to do so. With a vibrant pub and club scene as well as a dedicated performing arts following, you will never be short of something to do after dark.
The city has a healthy live music scene, along with clubs, bars, and taverns. Like the restaurants, the "scene" varies from one neighbourhood to another. What follows are some of the more popular areas.
For the true revellers among you the Richmond, Adelaide and John Street areas are where you should investigate. Huge multi story pubs and nightclubs ensure a good night out. Be prepared to queue, particularly at the weekend, but it shouldn’t take that long before you’re enjoying the club scene with three thousand or so fellow party animals.
The other big club area is Queen Street West and is where the trendier natives spend their evenings. You will need to dress up a little for these particular establishments, but once you’re inside the scene that greets you is the same as the more casual clubs – general mayhem and excellent fun.
Comedy clubs are also extremely popular and can be found throughout the city and the suburbs. With different local performers every night, many also feature some of the better known comedians on a regular basis. Many restaurants also have live stand ups a couple of times a week.
And for those of you who prefer something a little more refined than sweating for hours on a dancefloor, there are over twenty-five professional theatres with local productions making Toronto the third largest theatre centre in the English speaking world. These offer an excellent opportunity for a quiet night out and tickets are not that expensive.
For the best up to date guides for live entertainment during your stay check out the Globe and Mail, Toronto Star and Toronto Sun as well as NOW and EYE, free weekly guides to what’s on about the city.

-
14 Madison Avenue, Toronto, Canada
Taking up four floors over two converted Victorian houses, this pub is a legend in the city due to the constant expansion of the premises. Attracting an interesting mix of locals and visitors, the Madison (the Mad to those in the know) is one of the city’s top venues.
-
99 Blue Jay's Way, Toronto, Canada
The ultimate hockey bar with memorabilia covering every available inch of wall space, this place is owned by Wayne Gretzky, one of Canada’s most famous players. Located very close to the Skydome, it’s an extremely popular haunt with fan of any sport and will clearly show you just how obsessed the nation is with hockey in particular.
-
11 Polson Street, Toronto, Canada
A huge nightclub which packs three thousand revellers in, the Docks is the Toronto’s number one party spot. And, with regular foam parties as well as 18 volleyball courts, a beach, deck pool and an outdoor patio which seats a further fifteen hundred people it’s easy to see why.
-
312 Queen Street West, Toronto, Canada
Queen Street West has long since been the social centre of the city and the Bamboo has been operating right in the heart of it for over two decades. Playing everything from R&B to garage and rock to pop as well as a rooftop patio in summer, this venue has had plenty of time to get it just right.
-
318 Richmond Street West, Toronto, Canada
With a capacity to hold several thousand heaving bodies on its three floors, make sure you stick close to your friends or you may never see them again, well until the end of the night at least. Offering a spectacular view of the city from the deck which circles the building as well as an eclectic mix of music of all sorts get there in time, particularly at the weekend.
-
542 Queen Street West, Toronto, Canada
Recognisable by the bizarre scraps of metal outside, this rock venue is not for everyone. Similar to the exterior, the interior too is decorated with bizarre metal sculptures and intimidating pieces of art. In fact quite a few of the patrons have also succumbed to the supposed appeal of metal and are part of the body pierced set. Nevertheless the place is fun and an experience, if nothing else.
-
67 Front Street East, Toronto, Canada
Offering a combination of pub and performance area, C’est What is located in the basement of an old warehouse – sound familiar – and has played host to numerous bands which have gone on to much bigger and better things. With nightly performances by local up and coming musicians it is a good place to check out Toronto’s live music scene and maybe even spot some stars of the future.
-
1303 Yonge Street, Toronto, Canada
One of the largest cineplexes in the world, this is a perfect evening out for those of you feeling the effects of too many nights spent in establishments such of those listed above. It is also worth noting that there are cheap tickets on offer all day every Tuesday but get there early to buy them for the evening shows as they sell out very quickly.
-
2335 Yonge Street, Toronto, Canada
Toronto is home to a host of excellent comedy clubs and this is one of the best. With amateur stand-up comedians exhibiting their talent on a nightly basis as well as a really good restaurant and a relatively cheap cover charge of between $5 and $15 Yuk Yuk’s offers an alternative night out to those of you who are tiring slightly of the pub and club scene.
