With over five thousand restaurants dispersed throughout the city, it is easy to find something cheap and appetizing when eating out in Toronto. The city is probably most famous for the myriad of international cuisine which is available on every corner. From the Far East to the Deep South and the familiar to the exotic, you can literally travel around the gastronomic world without leaving even the city centre. What follows are some of the more popular types among locals and visitors alike.
With five different Chinatown areas and over five hundred Chinese restaurants this will have to be the first stop on our culinary journey through the city. Cooking styles from various provinces in China including Mandarin, Szechwan and Cantonese have been imported with great success to Toronto and as well as having some of the best restaurants, Chinatown is also home to many of the cheaper ones, just perfect for the budget traveller. Other ethnic cuisines found in and around Chinatown include Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian and Malaysian.
Next on the list has to be the huge selection of Italian restaurants in the city. While Toronto was once dominated by Mediterranean eating establishments, recent years have seen somewhat of a progression with many original restaurants now offering a fusion of both Mediterranean and various other world cuisines. Nevertheless, many traditional Italian restaurants remain and the best place to check these out are in Little Italy which is situated on College Street just west of Bathurst and the nearby Corso Italia on St. Clair West. Akin to those in Chinatown, the Italian restaurants in the city offer excellent value for money.
Greektown on Danforth Avenue is another popular choice. Playing host to a collection of family owned restaurants, recent years have seen a transformation of some of the older establishments making them extremely popular among the younger residents in the city. They also open quite late and are a popular stop off on the way home from the pub.
And if none of the above sound that appealing to you, you have absolutely no cause for concern. Take your pick from the variety of Indian, African, South Asian, French, Middle Eastern, Balkan, Irish, German and so many more restaurants throughout the city. Or perhaps you would prefer to stick to traditional Canadian fare which can be acquired in the number of steak houses, oyster bars and restaurants serving regional specialties. Either way, eating out in Toronto is a very satisfying experience.
